My First Job in TV | Working as a Junior Researcher and Runner

Posted on December 4, 2020 by Alexia Barrett

I am working with Wildflame Productions on the Living History Adventure Series, Ultimate Vikings.

From the name of my blog, all my readers know that I want to be a Writer. Not only an author of fictional novels but also a screenwriter, but that isn’t my only goal. While I do my writing on the side, I also have another dream.

This other dream has always been to work in TV, to learn about the production industry and to one day not only work as a producer, but to also work as a Show runner or Director.

I was steadily heading towards that dream when I landed a short runner role with the BBC show, The Big Questions. However, when COVID-19 initially broke out, and the Lockdown fully began in the UK, that position got cancelled.

I ended up self-isolating and finishing my studies from home, and after that I was at a loss.

I wanted to start my career in television but I wasn’t sure how. Seeking out entry level positions was not only extremely competitive but also scarce with the uncertainty that the virus had placed on productions.

But after a Tedx talk, a turn of luck and a wonderful recommendation, I was able to get a role as a Researcher and Runner for the Living History Adventure Series, Ultimate Viking.

I joined Wildflame Productions, and moved back to Cardiff, and now I have been working with them for a month and a bit.

Honestly, it would be impossible to summarise in words how grateful I am to be in this position. I’m finally taking that step forward into my dream career.

Not only am I working on such an amazing project, but I’m also with an amazing team. Everyone has been extremely friendly and welcoming. I settled in easily; everyday I learn new things and I feel my skill and knowledge improving.

I hope to work well, prove myself, and have many more exciting projects in the future.

Fingers crossed everyone.
